The E-Cap is a hemispherical plastic cover that can be easily installed over the open end of a high-efficiency gas furnace flue pipe. To ensure that our innovative product offers the highest level of weather resistance and durability, we chose GELOY CR7520 acrylic-styrene-acrylonitrile (ASA) resin from GE Advanced Materials instead of conventional PVC or acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin.
The constant exposure to different weather conditions, UV light, heat, and chemicals from the furnace gases requires a material with high resilience. We found that the outdoor durability, UV and chemical resistance, and thermal stability of GE’s GELOY CR7520 resin surpassed all alternatives. GELOY resin from GE gives the E-Cap a number of important attributes, including resistance, oxidative degradation, and an attractive glossy appearance.
In the design phase, we discovered that there were 3 different commonly used sizes for PVC pipes i.e., 1 1/2”, 2”, and 3”. In order to reduce the amount of inventory a supplier or contractor would carry, we developed a unique stair step inner core that accommodates all the 3 sizes. In doing so, we were able to achieve a much greater airflow from the E-Cap than the pipe can produce.
ORLANDO, Fla. — Homeowners who purchase a high-efficiency furnace expect years of top performance from this major investment. However, they may be unaware of a furnace’s vulnerability to mechanical problems caused by moisture, dirt, and debris that can enter the system via uncovered polyvinyl chloride (PVC) flue pipes. To solve this exposure problem and give homeowners the protection their furnaces require, PEAK Industries of Tulsa, Okla., created the E-Cap, a hemispherical plastic cover that is easily installed over the open end of a vertical flue pipe. And to ensure its innovative product would offer the highest level of weather resistance and durability, PEAK Industries chose GELOY* CR7520 acrylic-styrene-acrylonitrile (ASA) resin from GE Advanced Materials instead of conventional PVC or acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene (ABS) resin.
The E-Cap benefits both the homeowner and the furnace manufacturer by helping to reduce repairs and warranty claims. It protects against buildup of moisture and dirt in flue pipes that can lead to mechanical problems such as pressure switch failures, rust on draft inducer motors, and clogged drain reservoirs. Its exclusive design allows it to be installed on both intake and exhaust pipes, using standard PVC glue. The E-Cap is commercially available and has already been adopted by leading heating ventilation and air conditioning (HVAC) manufacturers.
“GELOY resin from GE gives the E-Cap a number of important attributes, including resistance to oxidative degradation and a very attractive high-gloss appearance, that we believe will significantly increase its appeal to HVAC industry,” said Mark Temple, owner and president of PEAK Industries. “This material also provided design flexibility and easy processing, giving a high-quality result. The GE resin was a major factor in the success of our E-Cap product.”
The most weatherable polymer in GE’s extensive product portfolio, GELOY resin continues to offer exceptional durability in outdoor environments without painting. It retains its color and mechanical properties under long-term exposure to UV light, moisture, and heat.
